Watch Now: Rep. Deutch Urges Regional Security Cooperation to Counter Iran in Final Hearing as Middle East Subcommittee Chair

(Washington) Today, U.S. Representative Ted Deutch (D-FL-22), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East, North Africa, and Global Counterterrorism, held his final Subcommittee hearing before leaving the U.S. House of Representatives:

“It is clear that these strengthened ties have ushered in a new era of opportunity for regional security cooperation, especially as the U.S., Israel, and our Arab partners in the Middle East share a common adversary in Iran,” said Rep Deutch.

“Iran has made its intentions to destabilize the region and wipe Israel off the map clear since before I came to Congress. When I arrived here, we were negotiating the toughest sanctions ever imposed on Iran. That was more than a decade ago…To this day, Iran remains the largest state sponsor of terrorism.

“As Israel’s relationships in the region grow, so, too, do the opportunities for this crucial security coordination.”

Members of the Subcommittee were joined by expert witnesses Ambassador Daniel Shapiro, Former Ambassador to Israel;Mr. Andrew Exum, Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East;Ms. Linda Robinson, Former Director of the Center for Middle East Public Policy at the RAND Corporation; and Mr. David Schenker, Former Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs.
