Rep. Deutch Statement on President Biden's Joint Address to Congress
TestU.S. Representative Ted Deutch (FL-22) issued this statement after attending in-person President Joe Biden's joint address to Congress:
"As President Biden often says, the number one responsibility of government is to protect its people. Tonight, he made clear his commitment to invest in our most valuable asset: the American people. When American families are healthier, safer, and better off, and when they can provide a better life for their children, then our entire nation thrives. As President Biden stressed tonight, we are not building back to the way things were; we are building back better.
"The American Recovery Plan was a historic investment in the success of workers, families, students, and small business owners who are emerging from the economic crisis caused by the pandemic. It was followed by the release of his American Jobs Plan, a once-in-a-generation reimagination of American infrastructure to not only address the urgent needs of today but also drive innovation that carries the American economy into the future.
"Tonight’s announcement of the American Families Plan is a commitment to raising up every American and building on the foundations of middle-class prosperity, including education, health care, and childcare. The American economy must work for all of us, not just the highest earners; our tax laws should reward work, not wealth.
"Building back safer means strengthening our gun laws to save lives from the other epidemic that has been plaguing communities across the country for far too long. As the congressman representing the Parkland community, including survivors and families of victims of the Stoneman Douglas tragedy, I thank President Biden for using his speech to call on Congress to finally take up measures to prevent gun violence that have strong support among the American people.
"Every American deserves a chance at the American dream, no matter your race or gender, whether you live in an urban or rural community, and whether you're earning minimum wage or living in a penthouse. President Biden has taken decisive action and developed robust plans in his first 100 days to achieve this vision. It is now up to Congress to work together on behalf of the American people to make our communities safer, healthier, and more prosperous."
