Rep. Deutch Statement on the Swearing-In of the 117th Congress
Following the swearing-in of the Members of the 117th Congress, U.S. Representative Ted Deutch (FL-22) issued this statement:
"With great honor and humility, I swore the oath to support and defend the Constitution and to faithfully discharge my duties as the representative of Florida’s 22nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
"There is no shortage of priorities that Congress must consider this term. Our country is in the grips of a deadly global pandemic, a crisis that the world had not seen in a century. Our economy is severely weakened. Workers have lost jobs, families have lost income, and businesses are hurting. The financial toll of this health crisis is leaving millions of Americans struggling to meet their basic needs. Our response efforts have been hampered by disinformation propagated by our outgoing president and his political allies, leading to deadly consequences for some and a divided nation for all. Efficient vaccine distribution, additional economic relief, and continued response efforts must be our top priority to heal and protect our neighbors and restore our economy.
"We must also use this Congress to finally take meaningful action on gun violence and climate change, two deeply personal issues to South Florida. I look forward to working closely with President-elect Biden on these shared priorities. We need to strengthen Social Security by increasing benefits and extending solvency to ensure this essential program remains for future generations. Congress must exercise its role in foreign policy to defend human rights, support our allies, and protect the security of the American people, including against cyber threats."I am proud to serve my constituents in Broward and Palm Beach Counties, home to diverse and vibrant communities that are always willing to extend a helping hand to others and stand united in times of crisis. I promise to represent these values and our shared interests in Washington and to fight for a better, stronger, safer, and more prosperous nation for all."
