Rep. Deutch Statement on Record 15k New Daily COVID-19 Cases
Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22) issued this statement after the Florida Department of Health reported 15,300 new positive COVID-19 cases, breaking the record of the largest single day case increase of any state since the pandemic began:
"This is not the kind of national record Floridians want; a staggering 15,300 new cases in Florida paired with dangerously-high hospitalization levels.
"Yet Governor DeSantis goes on TV almost daily to attack reporters and distract the public with confusion and misleading boasts about testing. Instead of talking about what he did back in March, he should be telling us his plan to address our current crisis.
"Where is our state surgeon general, our top public health official, to explain to Floridians what it means to see a 50% increase in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in one week? Dr. Rivkees should be out in front in providing Floridians with helpful recommendations to combat this deadly summer spike.
"Is Governor DeSantis even speaking to his public health officials? Or is he only listening to President Trump who has sidelined his top public health experts like Dr. Fauci?
"We need data. We need transparency. Floridians need to understand what is happening around them and what our leaders will do about it. This absence of leadership is disgraceful and it is dangerous."
