Legislative Updates: 115th Congress
Rep. Deutch Cosponsors Family Unity Rights and Protection Act
Today, Congressman Ted Deutch (D-FL-22) added his name as a cosponsor to the Family Unity Rights and Protection Act.
This act would require the reunification of children and their parents separated upon entry into the United States as a result of the “zero-tolerance” immigration policy, which requires criminal prosecution of all adults to illegally enter the United States. During this policy, more than 2,300 children were separated from their parents and sent to detention facilities around the country.
Separating children from their parents was a cruel and inhumane practice that was not consistent with the values of the United States. This bill would put a much-needed end to this policy, as well as ensure that it never again becomes the policy of the U.S. to do this.
