Legislative Updates: 115th Congress
Rep. Deutch Cosponsors Veterans Care Financial Protection Act
Today, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed the Veterans Care Financial Protection Act, legislation co-introduced by Congressman Deutch (FL-22) to protect veterans from pension poachers and scams.
Sophisticated scam artists target veterans by charging illegal fees for helping them apply for benefits, retroactively applying hidden costs for services, and shifting assets to annuities and trusts to make funds inaccessible to the veteran. This legislation would require the VA to work with federal agencies, states, and experts to develop and implement strategies to combat malicious scam artists.
Congressman Deutch is also the sponsor of the Seniors Fraud Prevention Act, which would require the Federal Trade Commission to monitor mail, television, internet, telemarketing, and robocalls for scams targeting seniors.
