Legislative Updates: 115th Congress
Rep. Deutch Co-Introduces Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2017.
Today, Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22) joined Congresswoman Terri Sewell (AL-7) and 180 other Members of Congress in introducing the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2017. Deutch also cosponsored this legislation in the 114th Congress.
In its Shelby County ruling, the Supreme Court gutted Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) by invalidating its jurisdictional coverage formula. The Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2017 takes an expansive and comprehensive view of the need to preserve access to the voting booth and will offer more protection to more people in more states. Specifically, this legislation creates a new geographic formula, increases transparency in federal elections, and revises the standard for preliminary injunctions for voting rights court cases.
