Rep. Deutch Statement on Pres. Trump's Ban on Transgender Soldiers
Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22), Vice Chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, issued this statement following President Trump's announcement that the U.S. military would not allow transgender Americans to openly serve:
"President Trump’s mean-spirited decision to exclude qualified and dedicated Americans from our military has no legitimate justification. This is discrimination against qualified Americans, and the policy has no basis in military need or legal authority.
"These are Americans, period. Transgender soldiers are just as committed as their fellow cisgender soldiers to defend our nation and our American principles. In fact, transgender Americans serve in the military at higher rates than the general population, and surveys have shown transgender veterans’ willingness to return to service if they were allowed to openly. We’re holding back our military from being the very best by denying skilled and honorable soldiers from our ranks. This decision is hateful and wrong.
"In the face of our Commander in Chief’s bigoted tweets, I’m standing proudly with the LGBT community and am committed to fighting his shameful, harmful policy."
