Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22), Ranking Member of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, issued this statement in celebration of Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day:
“A full century after the landmark Balfour Declaration recognized the need for a modern Jewish state of Israel, the democratic State of Israel marks 69 years of standing proudly as a beacon for democracy, equality, and pluralism.
“Against overwhelming odds and adversity, Israel flourishes as a vibrant global leader in humanitarian aid, technology and biomedical research, and the advancement of political equality.
“On this 69th anniversary, Israel should be celebrated not only for its tenacity in the face of hostile enemies who seek Israel’s destruction, but for challenging convention with innovation while holding tightly to Jewish democratic values.
“Today also marks 69 years of the U.S.-Israel relationship, a robust partnership that has been built on shared interests and shared values. As our friend and great ally, we will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder in our commitment to freedom, justice, and liberty.
“Today, we celebrate the special bond between our two countries, and we look to a future when we can celebrate the fulfillment of our unyielding search for peace.”
