Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22), senior member of the House Ethics Committee, issued the following statement following President-elect Trump’s insufficient plan to settle his many potential ethical and legal conflicts of interest as he enters office.
“Today Donald Trump came ready with his props but without necessary substance. This plan fails every ethics test, and as soon as Donald Trump takes the oath of office next week he will be in violation of the Constitution. The American people are still left in the dark about how much he owes to foreign creditors and foreign governments like Russia and China, and how much his existing deals in foreign countries pump into his family brand each year.
“His plan to avoid domestic conflicts by putting his sons in charge is not serious. By not setting up a blind trust and by not creating a firm ethical wall between the Oval Office and Trump Tower, Donald Trump is setting up for egregious ethical violations. Keeping the business in the family is far from acceptable.
“There is no precedent for the President-elect’s willingness to run roughshod over long-standing constitutional and legal precedents. It’s clear after today that under this Administration, ethical violations, both domestic and international, will be standard operating procedure from Day One.”
