Legislative Updates: 114th Congress
Rep. Deutch Calls on Congress to End Widow's Tax
Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21) joined Congressman Joe Wilson (SC-2) to reintroduce the Military Surviving Spouses Equity Act. The bipartisan legislation would eliminate the so-called “Widow’s Tax” and ensure that a service member's spouse or children receive the Survivor Benefit Plan annuities.
The current law creates an dollar-for-dollar offset of payments between the Survivor Benefit Plan and the Dependency and Indemnity Compensation causing surviving spouses of service members killed in the line of duty or from a service-connected cause to forfeit the Survivor Benefit Plan annuity. This is an unfair and inappropriate burden to place on the surviving spouses of those brave service members that have made the ultimate sacrifice to our country. Our legislation would repeal this policy and guarantee that surviving spouses are taken care of after the death of their loved ones. As the representative of a district home to veterans of every major conflict since World War II, Congressman Ted Deutch proudly signs on as a co-sponsor of the Military Surviving Spouses Equity Act.
