Legislative Updates: 114th Congress
Rep. Deutch Cosponsors Bill to Expand Medicare Coverage for CGM DevicesToday, Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21) joined Congressman Tom Reed (NY-23) to introduce the Medicare Access to CGM Act. This legislation will create a new benefit category under Medicare for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices. These devices, used by those with diabetes, monitor a person’s blood sugar throughout the day and alert the user when levels are too low or too high. Recent advancements in technology have also led to the creation of new mobile apps that sync with these blood sugar level monitoring devices. Currently, 95 percent of private plans cover CGM. However, Medicare does not cover the cost of a CGM; thus restricting access for thousands of Americans over the age of 65. Passing the Medicare Access to CGM Act will expand Medicare to ensure access to CGM devices for the 11.8 million American seniors living with diabetes.
