On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the historic March from Selma to Montgomery, high school students serving on Congressman Ted Deutch's (FL-21) Congressional Youth Cabinet will get an in-depth look at recent challenges to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Congressman Deutch, a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, will discuss with students the 2013 Supreme Court decision that struck down key portions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and charged Congress with updating the landmark law. Attending the event as guest speakers with unique perspectives on voting rights and election law are Mark Schneider, Chair of the Palm Beach Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and Susan Bucher, Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections. The Congressional Youth Cabinet is a nonpartisan program launched by Congressman Deutch to provide high school students in Palm Beach and Broward counties with an opportunity to explore local and national policy issues and learn how the legislative process works.
