Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21), Ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on the Middle East, issued this statement in advance of President Obama’s remarks on ISIL this evening:
“The brutal extremists marching under ISIL will stop at nothing to establish a regime of terror and intolerance that destabilizes the Middle East, endangers our allies, and jeopardizes the lives of Americans everywhere.
“Tonight, the President must present a decisive plan of action for the United States, our Middle East partners, and our international allies to work together to isolate, destroy, and ultimately defeat ISIL.
“This comprehensive strategy will include targeted military action by the United States, but our success will ultimately depend on the international community working in concert to cut off the illegal oil sales and other revenues that are funding ISIL's campaign of terror, to stem the spread of ISIL's despicable ideology worldwide, and to protect and empower moderates of all religions throughout the Middle East."
