Legislative Updates: 113th Congress
Rep. Deutch Cosponsors the America Votes Act of 2013
Congressman Deutch (FL-21) has signed on as an original cosponsor of H.R. 1748, the America Votes Act of 2013.
Every election there are thousands of Americans who, even though they are eligible, cannot vote due to strict state voter identification laws. In some states, people who do not hold a drivers license or identification card are turned away from the voting booth, disregarding the fact that some may not be able to get an ID due to either a disability or location. Currently, about one out of every four African-American voters, one out six Hispanic voters, and one out of every 10 eligible voters do not possess an acceptable ID. This bill would permit these people to vote by allowing them to sign a sworn statement, under penalty of perjury, affirming their information. Americans making an effort to fulfill their civic duty should not be turned away from the polls. To read more about H.R. 1748, click here. |
