Legislative Updates: 113th Congress
Rep. Deutch Cosponsors the Puerto Rico Status Resolution Act
Congressman Deutch (FL-21) has signed on as an original cosponsor of H.R. 2000, the Puerto Rico Status Resolution Act.
This legislation sets forth the process for Puerto Rico to be admitted as a State of the Union. In November 2012, 54 percent of Puerto Rican voters voiced their discontent with their current commonwealth status, with a majority of those polled selecting statehood as their preferred status. The bill proposes a federally sanctioned “yes” or “no” vote on statehood in Puerto Rico. A majority “yes” vote would trigger a 180-day deadline for the President to certify the result and lodge legislation in Congress to admit Puerto Rico as a full State of the Union. H.R.2000 gives the people of Puerto Rico the ability to determine their future status and have their voices heard. To read more about H.R. 2000, click here. |
