Legislative Updates: 113th Congress
Rep. Deutch Cosponsors the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act
As a proud member of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, Congressman Deutch (FL-21) has cosponsored H.R. 1998, the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act.
The tragedy that occurred in Zanesville, Ohio in 2011, in which humans were killed by big cats, can be avoided in the future. This legislation prohibits private ownership of big cats such as lions and tigers, except at certain accredited zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, and educational and research institutions. Current big cat owners are required to register their cats with the Department of Agriculture. The bill also outlaws big cat breeding outside of these accredited institutions. It is important that animals, whether kept as pets, found in the wild, or held in captivity, are treated humanely. H.R.1998 will ensure that these animals are treated properly and humanely, while not posing a threat to the safety of residential communities. To read more about H.R. 1998, click here. |
