Legislative Updates: 113th Congress
Rep. Deutch Cosponsors the Postal Service Protection Act of 2013
Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21) has cosponsored H.R. 630, the Postal Service Protection Act of 2013.
Americans rely on the United States Postal Service for sending, receiving, and shipping letters and packages across the US and around the world. However, as the use of technology continues to grow, the US Postal Service is often being undermined as the popular method of sending messages. The Postal Service Protection Act of 2013 would help support the postal service by instituting needed reforms that are vital for the future success and growth for the postal service. Specifically, to ensure the agency’s fiscal stability, this bill would eliminate the mandated prefunding of 75 years of future retiree health care benefits for employees. Importantly, this bill maintains the current six-day delivery service which will ensure that critical goods and services are able to be delivered on time. Furthermore, this bill proposes new ways the postal service could generate revenue such as by providing notary services and by allowing the shipment of wine and beer.
