Legislative Updates: 113th Congress
Rep. Deutch Cosponsors the Weekends Without Hunger Act
Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21) has cosponsored H.R. 1395, the Weekends Without Hunger Act.
While some students receive school meals during the week, some children go home over the weekend and remain hungry until they get back to school on Monday. The Weekends Without Hunger Act will create a pilot program that will provide nutritious food to at-risk school children over weekends and during school holidays throughout the school year. At-risk children are those that participate in school lunch programs and live in a district in which at least 50% of students also participate. The Secretary of Agriculture would implement these programs nationwide through eligible institutions such as food banks, food pantries, and shelters, and complete evaluations to monitor its effectiveness. This bill would fill gaps in federal services and ensure that these students do not go hungry when they are out of the classroom. To read more about H.R. 1395, click here. |
