Rep. Deutch Cosponsors the Patients’ Access to Treatment Act of 2013
Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21) has cosponsored H.R. 460, the Patients’ Access to Treatment Act of 2013.
Every year, thousands of Americans struggle to pay for the medications necessary to improve their lives. Patients with a range of conditions, including multiple sclerosis and some forms of cancer, can benefit from specialty and biologic drugs; however their high costs prevent many Americans from accessing them. The bipartisan bill H.R. 460 will make these critical treatments more affordable to millions of Americans, with the potential of saving lives or improving their quality of life. Under existing law, many patients must pay a percentage of the treatments for specialty drugs, as opposed to fixed rates for non-specialty drugs. A key measure of this bill would make insurers charge the same co-pay for specialty drugs as they do for other medications. This bill would also establish cost-sharing limits for health plans that cover prescription drugs. The Patients’ Access to Treatment Act offers a more affordable alternative for the average American citizen by requiring insurers to charge the same amount for specialty drugs as they do for other medications.
