Legislative Updates: 113th Congress
Rep. Deutch Cosponsors the DISCLOSE 2013 Act
Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21) has cosponsored H.R. 148, the Disclosure of Information on Spending on Campaigns Leads to Open and Secure Elections Act of 2013, or DISCLOSE 2013 Act.
After the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission to allow unrestricted special interest spending during elections, Americans have demanded increased transparency within campaign finance. With the legal ruling that corporations are able to spend as freely during an election as people, it is important to trace the origins of all campaign donations to make sure they are being completed in a legal fashion. H.R. 148 would force groups such as Super PACs and corporations to report any $10,000 campaign expenditure within 24 hours. Furthermore, this bill would force corporations and other outside groups to share their campaign-related spending to their shareholders and organization members. These and other provisions will promote transparency and disclosure of donations by corporations and outside groups in elections across the US. Congressman Deutch has taken a strong stance against the Citizens United decision, and has repeatedly called for serious campaign finance reform.
