Legislative Updates: 113th Congress
Rep. Deutch Cosponsors the Awarding of Congressional Gold Medal to Commemorate the Death of Four Girls in Sixteenth Street Baptist Church Bombing in 1963.
Congressman Ted Deutch has cosponsored H.R. 360, which would posthumously award a Congressional Gold Medal to commemorate the lives of Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley. These girls were killed in the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama in September 1963. This tragic event is recognized as a catalyst for the civil rights movement. The medal will reside and be on display at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
On the 50th commemoration of this hateful and despicable act, this award will rightfully commemorate the lives of the four girls, as well as serve as recognition for all those who suffered and used peaceful means to achieve racial equality in our country. To read more about H.R. 360, click here. |
