Legislative Updates: 112th Congress
Deutch Cosponsors the Pancreatic Cancer Research and Education Act
Congressman Ted Deutch has signed on as a cosponsor of H.R. 733, the Pancreatic Cancer Research and Education Act. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. This year, it is estimated that 44,030 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and 37,660 will die from the disease. Federal support for cures against cancer make a difference. This year, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1971 National Cancer Act. Since its enactment, overall cancer survival rates have increased from 50 percent to 68 percent. Sadly, pancreatic cancer survival remains at a grim 6 percent and the number of Americans dying from pancreatic cancer is increasing. We need to find new roads to progress for this devastating disease. This legislation would direct the National Cancer Institute to develop a long-term and comprehensive strategic plan for pancreatic cancer research and would provide the tools and resources they need to diagnosis and treat the disease earlier, and perhaps one day prevent it. The legislation also includes a grant program for not only pancreatic cancer, but for other deadly cancers, such as brain, stomach, esophageal, and liver cancers.
