Legislative Updates: 112th Congress
Deutch Cosponsors H.J.Res. 69
Congressman Ted Deutch has signed on to cosponsor H.J.Res.69, legislation that would reintroduce the Equal Rights Amendment, which promotes gender equality in the United States. H.J.Res 69 states that the U.S.Constitution should be equally applied to both men and women by declaring “equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex." The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) passed Congress back in 1972, and was sent to the states for ratification. Unfortunately, by the time the deadline had passed in 1982, the ERA was just three states shy of the thirty-eight ratifications necessary for inclusion in the Constitution. Congress can repeal existing equality laws with a simple majority vote. In recent years, there have been efforts to roll back women’s rights in education, health, employment, and even domestic violence. Congressman Deutch will continue to champion the Equal Rights Amendment and issues concerning gender equality in the House of Representatives.
