Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21) has cosponsored H.R. 519, the Uniting American Families Act.
This bill amends the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) to include “permanent partners” within its scope. “Permanent partners” are defined as individuals 18 years or older that are: in a committed relationship; financially interdependent; not married or in a permanent partnership with others; unable to contract with each other under the current provisions of the Act; and are not of first, second, or third degree of blood relation. By extending to “permanent partners” the same protections afforded to heterosexual couples under the INA, this bill gives gay and lesbian Americans the ability to sponsor their partners for legal residency. This bill would help end discrimination against people within the LGBT community and guarantee that LGBT bi-national couples will not be unfairly separated. It is another important step in extending equal rights to same-sex couples in our country.
