Congressman Deutch Commends Administration Decision to Promote Free Flow of Information to Iranian People
Congressman Ted Deutch (D-FL) released this statement on the Administration’s announced removal of decades-old restrictions on technology that will help facilitate greater access to information for the people of Iran:
“The Administration’s latest effort to allow greater access to technology will help promote the free flow of information to the Iranian people. For years, the Iranian regime has worked to systemically deny the people of Iran access to international and unbiased information, and to prevent them exercising basic human freedoms of expression and assembly. With elections drawing near, it is vital we stop the Iranian regime from successfully dropping an Electronic Curtain on its people.
“Yesterday’s actions by the Treasury Department send a powerful message to the Iranian people that we stand with them in their quest for freedom and democracy. Congress must further enhance these efforts by passing the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act, which now includes my amendment to help prevent Iran from obtaining technology used as tools of repression.”
Congressman Ted Deutch is Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Recently, the House Foreign Affairs Committee adopted an amendment authored by Congressman Deutch to the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act that would expose companies that transfer technologies to Iran used for repression and human rights abuses and prevent the sale of these sensitive technologies to those companies.
